Swimming Pool - Slide:  Blog Team Report - Question and Answers with Mayor...

Swimming Pool – Slide
The Blog Team Report:  A Question and Answer with Mayor Colleen Paden regarding Swimming Pool – Slide appearing on the ballot in this primary election in May 2012.

The blog team thought it would be productive to the issue of the Swimming Pool – Slide question to get information from decision makers in Stanton.  So as a member of the blog team, I took the initiative to contact Mayor Colleen Paden to clarify some of the particulars regarding the installation of a Pool Slide in or around the Stanton Community Swimming Pool.  These are questions and answers from this interview.

-          Question:  What were yearly expenses for the Stanton Swimming Pool last year?
-          Answer:  $40,500.00
-          Question:  What was yearly income for the Stanton Swimming Pool last year?
-          Answer:  $7,952.00
-          Question:  How was this income generated?
-          Answer:  Memberships, daily payers, pool events
-          Question:  How much money is in the Pool Sliders Fund, held in trust at the City of Stanton? Answer:  $7,100.00
-          Question:  What are the choices available to city leadership regarding the addition of a Swimming Pool Slide?
-          Answer:  Choice has been narrowed down by city leadership to choice (A) Stand Alone-Pool Slide Area; OR choice (B) Brand New/ADA upgraded – essentially a brand new swimming pool.

-          Question:  Could you explain choice (A) Stand Alone-Pool Slide Area
Answer:  choice (A) Stand Alone-Pool Slide Area refers to a separated area for a Pool Slide only.  No other swimming, this area will be dedicated only for a Swimming Pool Slide entry/exit.  Swimmers will access this area from the existing pool area’s northwest corner and new area is adjoined by concrete deck and is an ADA accessible area with a zero entry/exit.  Where swimmers will scale the stairs and slide down the erected pool slide.  The drawings will be made available to the public and discussed at our Town Hall Meeting
March 6th @ 7pm at the Stanton Community Building.

-          Question:  choice (A) Stand Alone-Pool Slide Area, do you have projected costs?
Answer:  Yes, these are preliminary projected figures based on the drawings presented, without changes, using today’s dollars.
Site Preparation                              $32,134.00
Installation Services Only              $17,680.00
Contingency items 25%                 $12,453.00
                Total Projection              $62,267.00

-          Question:  Could you explain choice (B) Brand New/ADA upgraded swimming pool?
Answer:  This new pool will bring our current swimming pool into compliance with ADA standards ( http://www.access-board.gov/recreation/guides/pdfs/pools.pdf ) and guidelines
http://www.recreonics.com/fyi/ada_detail_guidelines.htm  ).  To start any new projects on our current swimming pool as it sits and to include the donated Pool Slide, the city would have to fully comply with the Americans With Disabilities standards, which would include but is not limited to, zero entry into the water or a transfer system which would allow a disabled person to independently operate for entry, in both baby pool and main pool and strategically placed guard/assist rails, etc….  Leadership has been in a quandary over the swimming pool as it sits with leaking a continual problem, aging equipment and no zero entry or mechanical entry accommodations, guard rails, etc… requirements placement.  To dig away at the current structure to bring into compliance could be determined to not be cost effective leaving all of the other deficits of the swimming pool unresolved.

-          Question:  Do you have projected costs regarding a choice (B) Brand New/ADA upgraded swimming pool?
Answer:  This was estimated and using the costs from that time by Miller & Associates - An engineering firm hired by the City of Stanton in 2008 and was estimated as $1,253,000.00.  Which included all updated ADA requirements in this projected value.

The blog team would like to thank Mayor Paden for her time and research with regard to this important issue that faces our community.
